  • Dear Dr. Aaron,

I will thank you in advance for listening. My husband is a few years older than me and lately he has had a difficult time ….. um uh, I’m not exactly sure how to put this… we will be getting read to go and… yeah, I do not want to embarrass him. We made an appointment for next week, maybe you can talk to him? Maybe explain to him, having a truck with big wheels and tires doesn’t make you young! If he drove a car, it would be easier to get in and out! Tired of waiting for the “Truck Guy” Dear Tired, It is completely normal for one spouse to wait on the other for a multitude of reasons. Climbing up in a truck makes me feel safe and it may do the same for him. Joe Diffie said “if it weren't for trucks we wouldn't have tailgates!” Patience, compassion, and understanding go a long way in a relationship. I will see if we can figure out what might be contributing to his trouble climbing. Thank you for caring!! Dr. A P.S. I love tailgates…

  • Dear Dr. Aaron,

I just started martial arts training and plan to be a ninja by the end of the year. I hope to stay healthy and look good in my black uniform. Can you offer any tips or warnings? Dear Invincible in training, According to BMJ Open Sport Exerc Med. 2019 Aug 12, “The most common sports associated with shoulder injuries were football, cycling, skiing and martial arts, but varied with age and gender.” Most common shoulder injuries are slap lesions/tears, instability, rotator cuff tears A couple of methods for decreasing shoulder injuries is to improve the strength and flexibility of the shoulder. Once again just like the knee, the shoulder region stretching is important “Proper stretching- will improve range of motion and the joint’s mobility. Static stretches – Straight arms behind back Seated lean-back Dynamic stretches – Arm swings Shoulder strengthening Exercises Seated barbell shoulder press or dumbbell press – focuses on anterior and medial deltoids, triceps brachii Lateral shoulder raise – focuses on the deltoids Lying barbell triceps extension and triceps pushdown – focuses on the triceps brachii” Citation: Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning Regular chiropractic treatment for the proper alignment of your bones, joints will allow the proper tension and stress on your muscle for them to react at their maximum potential.

  • Dear Dr. Aaron,

My husband is convinced he can fix his back by using his DIY inversion contraption. Is this even possible? He used the winch and gambrel from his deer hunting equipment and some leg straps from a tree climbing friend, and he wants me to crank the winch so he can hang upside down like a redneck Batman. If you think it will help him, I might agree to assist him, but someone needs to watch the kids! How long should he hang by his heels? This whole thing seems as if it might interfere with my tv shows. Dear Devoted TV fan, While some home remedies have been effective for some, most medical treatments are best left to professionals. YouTube doctors and specialists have a wide range of techniques and are at a disadvantage when diagnosing and treating patients they cannot see or communicate with. Make an appointment and we will evaluate your husbands hunting gear, it is likely he is in need of a few upgrades…

My children are very involved with sports. I'm concerned they will be injured. Are there any suggestions of how to better protect them? Concerned parent of 3 Dear Concerned Parent, Having children involved in sports is a blessing in so many ways! Physical fitness is so important to our health. A recent study cited the top five sports related injuries to be: 1. Knee 2. Shoulder 3. Foot & Ankle 4. Hip 5. Head More than 50% of sport related injuries are to the knee. Ways to prevent knee injuries 1. Proper stretching- will improve range of motion and the joint’s mobility. This should be done for all areas not just the knees. Static stretching vs dynamic stretching Static – holding a position for an extended period Ex.: standing hamstring stretch, calf stretch, lying and standing quad stretch, pigeon stretch Dynamic – movement-based stretching Ex. : squats, lunges 2. Warm up and cool down Warming up helps the muscles, pulmonary and cardiovascular system. Lightly jogging or jumping jacks can be done for the warm up process Cooling down by walking briefly after activity instead of sitting down right away which can stiffen up the joints 3. Stay flexible By keeping the knees along with the hip and ankle joints flexible will help prevent future injury and that is where stretching comes into play 4. Don’t over train By overtraining and/or skipping the stretching or warming up can increase risk of injury to the joints. Also selecting appropriate exercises for your age and specific exercise goals 5. Regular chiropractic treatment for the proper alignment of your bones, joints will allow the proper tension and stress on your muscles for them to react at their maximum potential.
