Dear Dr. Aaron: Can You Throw a Rib Out Cooking Ribs?
Updated: Oct 15
Is it actually possible to displace a rib while cooking ribs?
My husband swears he “threw a rib out” lifting a tray of ribs into the smoker. I say he just had one too many adult beverages while “supervising” the smoke. Now he’s walking around holding his side like he’s auditioning for a barbecue drama.
So, Doc—do ribs really go “out,” or is this just a case of too much sauce and not enough sense?
Signed,
Saucy but Skeptical
Dear Saucy but Skeptical,
Yes, ribs can cause some very real pain—but the phrase "throwing a rib out" isn't quite as straightforward as your husband might think!
He could have strained a muscle while lifting that tray, irritated a rib joint, or simply developed a severe case of barbecue bravado. 🍺🔥
Unfortunately, we can't determine which one it is by counting how many ribs made it onto the smoker!
If his discomfort continues, let's get him properly evaluated to determine what's causing it and what treatment may be appropriate. Severe or unexplained chest pain, particularly with shortness of breath, sweating, or dizziness, needs immediate medical attention.
In the meantime, perhaps keep the adult beverages to a minimum and the ribs on the smoker—not in the excuse pile.
Stay saucy,
Dr. Aaron
